[1:10]  1 tn Or “was made”; Grk “came into existence.”

[1:10]  2 tn Grk “and,” but in context this is an adversative use of καί (kai) and is thus translated “but.”

[1:10]  3 tn Or “know.”

[8:35]  4 tn Or “household.” The Greek work οἰκία (oikia) can denote the family as consisting of relatives by both descent and marriage, as well as slaves and servants, living in the same house (more the concept of an “extended family”).

[8:35]  5 sn Jesus’ point is that while a slave may be part of a family or household, the slave is not guaranteed a permanent place there, while a son, as a descendant or blood relative, will always be guaranteed a place in the family (remains forever).

[8:51]  6 tn Grk “Truly, truly, I say to you.”

[8:51]  7 tn Grk “If anyone keeps.”

[8:51]  8 tn Grk “my word.”

[8:51]  9 tn Grk “he will never see death forever.” The Greek negative here is emphatic.

[8:51]  sn Those who keep Jesus’ words will not see death because they have already passed from death to life (cf. 5:24). In Johannine theology eternal life begins in the present rather than in the world to come.

[10:8]  10 tn Grk “are” (present tense).

[10:8]  11 tn Or “the sheep did not hear them.”

[11:21]  12 tn Grk “Then Martha.” Here οὖν (oun) has not been translated for stylistic reasons.

[11:26]  13 tn Grk “will never die forever.”

[16:18]  14 tn Grk “they kept on saying.”

[16:18]  15 tn Grk “What is this that he says.”

[16:18]  16 tn Grk “A little while.” Although the phrase τὸ μικρόν (to mikron) in John 16:18 could be translated simply “a little while,” it was translated “in a little while” to maintain the connection to John 16:16, where it has the latter meaning in context.

[16:18]  17 tn Or “we do not know.”

[16:18]  18 tn Grk “what he is speaking.”
